Prop firm traders: the maths that keeps your account alive

Most funded and challenge accounts aren't lost to bad analysis. They're lost to the rules: a daily loss limit hit before lunch, stops too tight to survive, a news spike, a weekend gap. Work out your numbers before the trade, not after.

Why prop accounts fail

1. The daily loss limit

Two or three oversized losses and the day, sometimes the account, is over. The limit is usually measured from your start-of-day balance or equity, including open losses.

2. Stops squeezed to fit

When the position is too big, the stop has to be tiny to stay inside the limit. Normal noise, or a quick sweep past an obvious level, takes it out before the real move.

3. News spikes

Big US releases (CPI, jobs, Fed) can move Gold $20โ€“40 in seconds and jump straight past stops. Many firms also restrict trading in a window around high-impact news.

4. Revenge trading

A loss, then a bigger trade to win it back, then another. The daily limit is usually hit by the third or fourth trade of a bad day, not the first.

5. Weekend gaps

Gold closes Saturday morning and reopens Monday morning (Australian time). Prices can open far from Friday's close, straight past a stop.

6. Too many trades

Every trade costs spread and gives the market another chance to hit your limit. Fewer, better trades usually survive longer.

Sizing from the stop, not the other way round

Decide where the trade is wrong first (the stop), then let the size follow:

Position size = money you're prepared to lose รท stop distance
Gold: 1 standard lot is usually 100 oz, so a $1 move = $100 per lot. Check your platform's contract size: it varies between brokers.

Worked example (a $50,000 account, 3% daily limit, 6% maximum loss, $200 risk per trade):

Many traders also set personal limits tighter than the firm's, for example a maximum number of trades a day, or stopping for the day after two losses. That's a personal choice; the point is to decide it before the session starts.

Stops and whale levels

On The AU Desk chart, zones show where big traders sit. Price often pokes past a zone before it reacts, and the stops just beyond obvious highs and lows are what get swept. Traders who use levels often place stops beyond the whole zone (and any forced buying or selling band touching it) rather than just inside it, and size down so the wider stop still costs the same. Our Start here guide explains the labels.
